Regensburg Information
The Bavarian city of Regensburg, located at the Danube about 100 kilometres north-east of Munich, is a very historic place. It is the only Gothic style big city in Germany and has retained its medieval face with only few scars.
The fact that it was not subject to rapid industrialization during the 19th century turned out to be beneficial in retrospect. The impressive traces of its development from a Roman fortress to a prosperous trade and diocesan town, to a proud royal imperial seat and convention place of the "Immerwährender Reichstag" (first form of German parliament) are preserved in rare harmony. Most famous are the gothic cathedral and the spectacular 12th century stone bridge.
Important impulses that have an influence even in our time were initiated here. The prominent palace of the counts of Thurn und Taxis, for example, which are resided in Regensburg since the beginning of the 19th century, stand for the founding of the modern postal system in Europe.
The countryside of Eastern Bavaria surrounding Regensburg is as lovely as the town itself and presents several attractions. There will be opportunities to combine attendance at the Symposium with visits to the city and surrounding countryside. It may well be worth taking time off for a vacation in Bavaria before or after the Symposium.

If you wish to know more about Regensburg and its University, you can look into the homepages of the city
(http://www.regensburg.de/) and the university (http://www.uni-regensburg.de/).
Both homepages offer an English version.

Climate
The weather in Regensburg during early autumn is quite pleasant with temperatures around 20° C. However evenings can be cool, so it is advisable to bring a jacket with you.
Also occasional showers are possible and a raincoat or umbrella could become necessary.
